Online Mass Spectrometry Seminars
Upcoming seminar:
Date/Time: October 22, 2025 / 1300 UTC
Topic: LCMS investigation in some selected locally manufactured alcoholic drinks for synthetic aphrodisiacs for the claimed sexual enhancement
The increasing demand for aphrodisiacs has led to the adulteration of local drinks with synthetic substances. This study utilized Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) to detect synthetic aphrodisiacs mainly sildenafil in local alcoholic beverages. The study used 7 locally manufactured alcoholic beverages. The samples were extracted using DCM and methanol and was subjected LCMS data acquisition. 10 ug/ml of each sample was subjected to LCMS for data acquisition. Both negative and positive modes were used to acquire the data. Detailed analysis confirmed the presence of sildenafil in almost all the samples. This study is very basic and fundamental and these results would play an important role for future analysis related. The quantitative part of the work would be done to determine the exact amount of the sildenafil used in the preparation and comprehensive report will be submitted to the food and drugs authority for better monitoring of the activities of the local producers.

Why? When? Who? What?
The inspiration behind the establishment of this online mass spectrometry seminar platform was driven by our passion for the subject and wish to share with as wide an audience as possible. The platform facilitates academics, engineers and enthusiasts to share their research and mass spectrometry experience with others across the Globe.
The seminar sessions are free to attend, to start with, speakers will be invited to share their work, however, members are most welcome to apply to present and join the program. Audience participation is encouraged and there will be a question-and-answer session at the end of each seminar.
Dr. Giles Edwards FRSC
Giles is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has been working with mass spectrometry systems since 2000 in various capacities. These include at present consultancy with Anthias Consulting Ltd, development of a novel mass spectrometry platform and contract analysis with Artemis Analytical Ltd as well as working in the nuclear physics group at the University of Manchester. Giles also founded the Recycling Organisation for Research Opportunities in 2005 that donates refurbished mass spectrometry systems to academics in developing countries, everyone needs a mass spectrometer.
Dr. Hendrik Kersten
Hendrik´s background is physical chemistry (teaching and research) and he has been playing around with all kinds of mass spectrometers in various fields of application since 2007. He is head of the institute for pure and applied mass spectrometry (ipaMS) at the University of Wuppertal, organizes workshops in fundamental mass spectrometry and implemented a two semester module in the chemistry master with two lectures and a lab course covering the broad interdisciplinary field of mass spectrometry.
